Tamil Nadu: Conmen pose as income tax sleuths, decamp with Rs 20 lakh from businessman's house in Coimbatore

In yet another fraud incident, five men posed as income tax officials and duped a businessman of Rs 20 lakh at Kinathukadavu on Saturday. Reportedly, the five-member gang went to a quarry owner's house around 01:00 pm on Saturday.

As per the report, the victim has been identified as K Panchalingam. According to the police, the gang arrived in a car at Panchalingam's residence and introduced themselves as Income Tax officers.

Fake I-T officials took his phone and started conducting raid. The gang members locked the victim's house from inside and took a digital video recorder of CCTV camera, and six cheques before fleeing from the spot.

In his complaint to the police, K Panchalingam also said that they also accused him of tax evasion and told him that they are Income Tax department officials and had come for a raid. During the raid, men posing as income tax officers found Rs 20 lakh in cash and cheques from his almirah.

When Panchalingam enquired why they did not bring police officers with them, they told him police would arrest him and lodge him in jail for the offence.

While commenting on the incident, a police officer said, "The five were wearing formal dress with a tie and used fake ID cards. They spoke among them in English often,” as saying was quoted by the Times of India.

Meanwhile, the gang members before leaving the place told the complainant to collect the cash after submitting the original documents at the Pollachi income tax office. Panchalingam noticed that the car in which they visited his place did not have any registration numbers.

On realising that he was cheated, the businessman approached the Kinathukadavu police. A case has been filed with the Kinathukadavu police in this matter and further probe is on.
