Harsh Goenka posts about papad and GST in viral tweet. Tax dept fact-checks it

The Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs has fact-checked a tweet about papad and Goods and Services Tax (GST) posted by industrialist Harsh Goenka on Tuesday. It all started with a mistake that Harsh Goenka made in his now-viral post and he was corrected by the Tax Department soon after.

Papad is a seasoned flatbread made from dried dough of black gram bean flour, either fried or cooked with dry heat until crunchy.

Harsh Goenka, in his tweet, posted two pictures of papad in two shapes round and square. From the caption of his post, it is clear that Harsh Goenka misunderstood the entire concept related to papad and GST.

“Did you know that a round papad is exempt from GST and a square papad attracts GST? Can anyone suggest a good chartered accountant who can make me understand the logic?” Harsh Goenka said in the caption of his post.

The CBIC corrected Harsh Goenka in a post on Twitter, saying, “Papad, by whatever name known, is exempt from GST vide Entry No. 96 of GST notification No.2/2017-CT(R). This entry does not distinguish based on the shape of papad.” It also added that the information is available on the website of Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs.
