Two arrested for impersonating as GST officers

 









The Entrustment Document Fraud Wing (EDF) of the Central Crime Branch (CCB) has arrested two persons who allegedly cheated an employment agent of ₹1 crore by impersonating the Commissioner of Goods Service Tax (GST) and offering to settle a dispute in tax dues.

According to the police, Venkatesan runs a placement agency in Sriperumbudur and paid taxes between 2012 and 2017. Thereafter, he was not able to pay the tax, the arrears piled up to ₹4.75 crore and hence a summons was sent to him.


On the advice of his auditor Mohan Babu, he approached Thanigaivel who claimed that the GST Commissioner was known to him and offered to settle the dispute. Thanigaivel introduced Deepak Kothari as a GST commissioner and collected ₹1 crore for settling the GST dispute. Then they failed to settle the dispute and return the amount. It later emerged that the man was a fraud and imposter.

On his complaint, the police investigated and arrested Deepak Kothari, 48, of Kilpauk and D. Thanigaivel, 47 ,of Nanganallur, who is treasurer of Akila Bharatiya Sathriya Maha Sabha. A senior police officer said investigation would be conducted into whether the duo had nexus with any officers in the GST department.
